YOUR COAST GUARD CREDENTIALS AND THE NDR
Each applicant for a Coast Guard license or Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD) must first clear the National Driver Register (NRD). This requirement is one of the many requirements that stem from the Exxon Valdez grounding in 1989. The purpose of this article is to explain both the Coast Guard and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) processes, as completing the check involves coordination between these two Federal agencies. Knowing a little about this time consuming process can help minimize stress.
