TECHNOLOGY AND CREATIVE SERVICE DELIVERY: A PARTNERSHIP IN PROVIDING COST EFFECTIVE SERVICE
Maintaining service with diminishing financial support is a daunting task for many transit systems. Innovative and creative approaches to the provision of service separates the following four systems from their peers: Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT); Madison Metro Transit, Madison, WI; SMART, Suburban, Detroit; and the West Valley Smart Shuttle operated by R&D Transportation, Los Angeles, CA. Each system is unique in its approach to the provision of service. This paper focuses on creative alternative service delivery approaches and how they are supported by technology. Each system is profiled in more detail to share their processes and also some of the successes and failures they have encountered. Their approach to utilizing technology is also prominently featured. These systems believe the support of their service by technology is essential to their continued success.
