MATERIALS MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING: AN ORGANIZATIONAL PERSPECTIVE
This paper focuses on the inventory planning process at Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) from an overall organizational perspective. It takes a great deal more than just planning to achieve the agency's objectives. Key elements to support effective inventory planning are: having established policies and guidelines; a support organization; reliable information; the freedom to make decisions; and, follow-through. This paper goes into some of the issues a planner considers as the planning and stock replenishment process continues. The importance of the human element in the planning process is emphasized.
