MASS TRANSIT AS AN ATTRACTION: DOWNTOWN TROLLEYS AND BRIGHT BUSES
Partnering local mass transit with local tourism can be of great benefit to the transit organization as well as the city and its visitors. Visitors can benefit from easy, efficient transportation to various attractions, and this in turn gives a favorable impression of the city and easy access to its various attractions. The partnership also helps the transit industry by enhancing its image as being part of a vacation destination, a fun activity, a choice ride. The paper describes the Knoxville Area Transit's (KAT) refurbishment of its downtown trolley system into one that is more tourist-oriented, fun and friendly. The results have been a substantial increase in ridership (14%) since the new system was unveiled.
