CONSTRUCTION OF BRIDGE OVER PLATTE RIVER ON BNSF
Minnesota Corn Processors approached BNSF in 1993 to determine the feasibility of reconstructing a rail line from Bellwood to Columbus (Nebraska) to service a corn processing plant at Columbus. This project involved the laying and surfacing of 5 miles of track, upgrading of almost 36 miles of track, and construction or rehabilitation of 5 railroad and vehicular bridges. This paper, presented at a 1998 conference on railway and structures, describes the construction of 1 of these bridges designed to carry railroad traffic across the Platte River.
