PERSONALITY PREDICTORS OF SELF-REPORTED ACCIDENT PRONENESS AMONG TURKISH BUS DRIVERS (ABSTRACT ONLY)
Motor vehicle traffic accidents are a leading cause of death in Turkey; statistics indicate that more 5,000 people were killed in such accidents in 1998. Bus accidents constitute 9% of total motor vehicle accidents but account for 18% of total fatalities. This research describes a study conducted to evaluate the power of certain personality characteristics in predicting motor vehicle accident proneness among Turkish bus drivers. A sample of 178 bus drivers employed in mass transportation participated. Questionnaires dealing with accident proneness, high risk driving, and personality scales were administered. Data analysis is ongoing and findings will be presented at a later date.
