LONG-TERM PERFORMANCES, TESTS, AND EVALUATIONS OF ASPHALT TRACKBEDS

This paper describes, in some detail, the results of a recent characterization and evaluation program of several hot-mix asphalt (HMA) underlayment railroad track beds to ascertain the effects of long-term exposure in various environments relative to performance of the track bed materials. Samples of the HMA and underlying road bed (subgrade) materials were subjected to laboratory tests. The expected benefits and asphalt track bed life expectations are discussed relative to current basic design construction practices.
