HANDS ACROSS THE SEA
This article describes the expected opening of the Oresund Bridge on July 1, 2000, a crucial element of the Fixed Link Project physically connecting Sweden and Denmark. The 16 km long railway and highway will join the regions of Scania in Sweden and Zealand in Denmark and merge the 2 into the new Oresund Region. With over 3.5 million people, the Oresund Region will be the largest domestic market in Northern Europe. One of the largest (in scope) infrastructure projects in European history, the Oresund Link comprises the world's strongest cable-stay bridge and the world's largest immersed tunnel in terms of volume with 4 parallel tunnel tubes. Aspects of the development and construction of the project are discussed.
