BASE STABILITY OF DEEP EXCAVATION IN ANISOTROPIC SOFT CLAY. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by S.F. Su, H.J. Liao, and Y.H. Lin, published in this journal (Volume 124, Number 9, September 1998), is presented. Discussion centers on two aspects of the paper's results: the proposed upper bound (UB) analyses predict that basal failure occurs at smaller depths than the finite element calculations, and by using peak undrained shear strengths measured in laboratory tests (K sub 0-consolidated triaxial compression and extension tests), the authors manage to calculate FS=1 in their UB analysis of the Taipei case study. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
