THE ROLE OF ETHICS IN DESIGN-BUILD PROJECTS
This essay, which won one of three zone competitions for the 1999 Daniel W. Mead Prizes for Student Members of the American Society of Civil Engineers, examines the role of ethics in design-build projects. Ultimately, the designer is potentially held accountable for any and all unethical behavior in design-build projects. The likelihood that the designer will agree to, ignore, or solicit unethical acts decreases as the degree of their professional and legal responsibilities increase. Design-build companies exist and compete on the basis of their professional reputations and quality of services. Unethical practice on behalf of the contractor and/or design professional would eventually diminish the reputation resulting in economic and professional failure. The fundamental canons of ethics for the engineering profession provide the structure and guidelines for successful design-build establishments to exist.
