New evidence indicates that cars equipped with antilock braking systems (ABS) are no longer overrepresented in crash statistics. An important aspect of the better crash rates is a reduction in single-vehicle, run-off-the-road crashes. Also, lower crash rates could be the result of experience with ABS; while some motorists may have learned not to overcompensate with riskier driving. Newer figures still show no safety benefit from the devices.
