PROBLEMS OF TRAFFIC SAFETY IN LITHUANIA AND METHODS OF THEIR SOLUTION

One of the main traffic problems is ensuring the safety of traffic in the roads and streets. The number of fatalities is from 400,000 to 500,000 per year around the world. Moreover, about 15 - 20 million people are injured yearly. In other words, more than 1,100 people are killed and more than 4,000 people are injured in the world every day. In 1980-1998, there were 14,781 fatalities and 97,002 injuries in 98,307 traffic accidents in Lithuania. From 4,000 - 6,500 traffic accidents per year are registered in Lithuania, in which 700-800 people are killed and 4,000-6,000 are injured. About 60 children are killed in traffic accidents per year, in Lithuania, and almost 1000 become invalids. During an 18-year period, one of every 38th Lithuanian inhabitant was injured in a traffic accident. This paper analyzes traffic safety in Lithuania, discusses the main causes of traffic accidents, and describes some countermeasures that could be taken to improve traffic safety there.
