THE DEVELOPMENT OF ROAD RESTRAINT SYSTEMS (RRS) WITH INCREASING CONTAINMENT LEVELS ACCORDING TO THE EN 1317
This paper presents the use of EN 1317 to develop road restraint systems with increasing containment levels. It discusses the new European Union Norm EN 1317 as the starting point for the development of advanced road restraint systems. It describes the challenges the development poses for research and development. It relates the German standard for guardrails (since 1972) as the bases for further development. It presents the correlation between technical solutions and economic efficiency when it comes to road restraint systems and their production, application, maintenance and logistics. Finally, it discusses the successful efforts of the Volkmann & Rossbach group in research and development.
