SMARTCARD AUSTRALIA

The companies Telstra, ERG, and ANZ have announced that they have agreed non-binding principles for developing an open common platform for processing smart-card transactions in Australia. This agreement will accelerate the development of the smart-card industry, and place Australia in a leading position. The three companies will negotiate the establishment of a smart-card joint venture company, to which they will contribute capital and resources. The new company, not yet named, would establish and run a transaction centre, open to all players, to handle transaction processing using the smart-card platforms of Telstra and ERG. It will provide total processing capabilities for organisations wishing to implement smart-card systems supporting many applications. According to the financial services company ANZ, the demand for smart cards in Australia is likely to be driven initially by mass transit and telephone applications, followed by business-to-business e-commerce. Later on, demand will also be driven by customer-to-business e-commerce, especially Internet transactions.
