NEW ROUTE IN MANILA
This article reports on the second light rail project in the Philippines which opened in Metropolitan Manila on 15 December 1999. This line is known as MRT III, and cost US$655M. Its contractor MRT Corp. (MRTC) will manage and operate the line, and be paid by the Department of Transport and Communications for the monthly lease rental specified in its contract. This mass transit system will be very important to the 10M inhabitants of Manila, which has had worsening road congestion; it will reduce travel time to and from the centre, and could relieve the congestion. MRTC says that the line's trains could carry at least 600,000 people per day at present, and that there is capacity to raise this figure to 1M people per day later; its average speed is 47kph. The link with the LRT 1 metro is expected to be completed and open by mid-2000. Over 50% of the railway is built at various elevations, and 8% of it is in tunnel. Phase 1 of the line is 16.8km long and Phase 2 will be 5.2km long. An extension to the LRT 1 metro is planned to open by 2004, and bids for its construction contract are now being considered. The main bidder is SNC Lavalin International of Canada, but arrangements for financing the project are still being negotiated. There will also be several subcontractors.
