HOW TO SUBSTANTIALLY IMPROVE PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE WITH NO INCREASE IN COST

A patching procedure is outlined which will take longer to complete than the conventional method but will stay in position longer. The first step involves squaring the distressed area both horizontally and vertically. The two sides of the square or rectangle should be perpendicular to the direction of traffic. A tack coat of liquid asphalt should be brushed, mopped or sprayed on the sides and bottom of the hole. Cold mix or hot mix should then be placed in the hole. Compaction must be in layers if the hole is more than 6 inches deep. A straight edge should be used to check the grade and trueness of the patch as and after the patch material is put in place. The importance of well organized trained crews is emphasized.
