SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS ON TWO-LANE RURAL ROADS
A Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt)(Germany) task force has developed a research program which examines the effect of measures directed at improving road layout, traffic engineering and traffic control on the safety and traffic flow of two-lane rural roads. Particular attention was given to road sections with high accident densities where an adequate standard layout, for example with a 2+1 cross section, could not yet be financed and where individual local measures seemed inappropriate. It is intended that the measures should offset shortcomings in road design and characteristics and allow drivers to travel at a suitable speed.
