THE AIR CARGO BOOM--ARE WE READY?
Global economies and growing use of E-commerce and the Internet are driving an air cargo boom that will see volume increases of 6.4% annually over the next 10 years, according to recent U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) forecasts. This follows the near tripling of global air cargo volume over the past 10 years. This article examines the issue of whether airports will be able to handle these projected increases in air freight and cargo transport and traffic. Examples are cited of airports striving to deal with these trends, legislation such as the Airport Improvement Program, and other air transportation industry efforts.
