DESIGNATED DRIVERS. WHO IS IN THE HOUSE?
Survey data reveals that it is the presence of children in the home that most influences the type of new vehicle that is purchased. Household composition has changed dramatically in 30 years, with the number of married couples with children under 18 shrinking to just 25% today from a majority percentage in 1970. Empty nesters (married couples without children at home) currently make up 28% of households and this number is expected to grow to 47% by 2008. This article discusses how these changing demographics are affecting and will continue to affect the automobile industry and the consumer car and truck buying preferences of U.S. households.
