KEEP 'EM MOVING--THE EZ WAY
The HCM (Highway Capacity Manual) is considered to be one of the most important and widely used manuals by traffic engineers. It is used to assist engineers with procedures for analysis of transportation facilities and also for capacity and operational analyses. The HCM is also available as computer software (known as HCS) in a variety of different products to aid in analyzing operations for freeways and street networking. However, these programs have their limitations, especially regarding user-friendliness and program flexibility. This article describes the EzHCS, a newer software version of the HCS designed to replicate the procedures of the 1997 HCM. EzHCS performs many of the more difficult tasks that the user is required to perform manually with other HCM-based software packages. With EzHCS, output results are shown both graphically with a summary of the analysis and in the traditional tabular format.
