LOGISTICAL FACTORS IN DETERMINING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF OPERATION OF THE PORT OF RIJEKA
This paper examines various logistical factors, both positive and negative, in determining the significance of operation of the port of Rijeka in Croatia. The basic logistical advantage of the Rijeka traffic route and port as a starting/ending point is its geographical position at the crossroads of the Adriatic-Central Europe transport route, in the region where the Adriatic sea enters deepest into the European mainland. The main logistical drawbacks of the port of Rijeka are the inadequate railway and road connections with the hinterland and that its large available installed cargo handling capacities are largely technically and technologically obsolete. Many other aspects of this port city's logistical position at the center of trade and traffic routes are also discussed.
