NOISE ABATEMENT: A HANDS ON APPROACH

The Port Authority of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh (the Authority) faced major wheel/rail generated noise problems from the opening of its light rail system in the mid-1980s. The Authority's noise problems were particularly apparent in the Gateway Loop in the downtown subway. Resolving these noise issues is increasingly a subject of public scrutiny and the pursuit of a solution is recognized as science. During the past 3 years the Authority focused on resolving the problem by applying friction modifiers to the head of the rail. This paper discusses the end results as well as problems encountered and the associated solutions.
