MAKING THE MOST OF EUROPE'S BRIDGES
A two year research project to develop a framework for a bridge management system (BMS)in Europe has just been completed. The goal was to create a system that can be used by bridge owners and operators all over Europe. The research was undertaken in seven work packages, six of which focused on the modules required to create the BMS. Each of the six work packages was split into two stages, first reviewing the state of the art and identifying the requirements for a BMS. The second stage involved developing guidelines for the various modules for the system. Under the seventh work package, existing systems were reviewed and the findings were used to develop the framework for a BMS.
