This article re-examines the positions economic historians have taken recently on the timing, extent and reasons for the heavy capitalization of home railways in an attempt to resolve the inconsistencies in argument and interpretation that exist currently, and to settle also some unresolved issues concerning the business judgement of the industry's management after 1870.
