FROM TRESTLES TO TRACKS: THE INFLUENCE OF THE MOTOR CAR MANUFACTURING PROCESS ON THE DESIGN OF BRITISH CAR FACTORIES. IN: MOTOR TRANSPORT
Most studies of the development of the British car industry have concentrated upon its broader economies and personalities, with more recent works also considering labor organization and the role of trade unions. Yet the organization of production and the layout of workshops and factories was a major contemporary issues as evinced by the line column space given to it both in automobile engineering journals and the more popular magazines such as The Autocar. This study is based on these sources, together with company photographic archives, deposited building plans, and collections of press cuttings and other material held by local libraries in Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Manchester, Guildford and Sheffield. The developing motor industry is considered during the first forty years; years which can be divided, somewhat arbitrarily, into three periods, each characterized by a style of car manufacture and ended by an event which, although not of immediate significance, was to set the predominate style for the succeeding period.
