AN IMPROVED K-FACTOR FORMULA. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by F. Cheong-Siat-Moy, published in this journal (Volume 125, Number 2, February 1999), is presented. The discusser provides an accurate expression for determining the lateral stiffness and a simplified formula for calculating the flexibility parameter. The discusser also suggests a method for avoiding overall system instability when it is precipitated by the premature buckling of a weak column in the no-sway mode. Discussion is followed by closure from the author.
