1999 TRAFFIC DEATHS DOWN 1 PERCENT
Motor vehicle deaths in December 1999 totaled 3,170, down 5% from the December 1998 total of 3,340. The preliminary death total for 1999 is 40,750, down 1% from the 1998 total of 41,200. Disabling injuries through December are estimated at nearly 2.2 million. Based on preliminary vehicle mileage reports for 1999, the estimated annual mileage death rate is 1.5 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (0.9 deaths per 100 million vehicle km). Two tables compare fatality data by state and by month for 1997, 1998, and 1999. A map illustrates the rate fatalities increased or decreased by state.
