FLIGHT SAFETY IN THE CIS COUNTRIES
The speaker discusses civil aviation safety in the Commonwealth of Independent States. In 1997 there were 42 airplane incidents, 14 aircraft accidents, and 264 fatalities. Charter air flights (unscheduled flights) seem have many more accidents than scheduled flights. The former USSR had very few unscheduled flights, and it is surmised that inexperience with unscheduled flights is the cause of the accidents. Flight safety in scheduled flights has increased in the last few years. Regional integration of independent aircraft accident investigations has been helpful. International collaboration would be of benefit to help improve overall flight safety in the Commonwealth of Independent States.
