SPEED CONTROL PROJECT N216, PERIOD UNDER EVALUATION: 1993-1995
This paper reports on a speed control project undertaken in 1992 on the N216 provincial road in The Netherlands, between Schoonhoven and Gorinchem. The paper presents the results of the evaluation period from 1993-1995. The following was concluded from the project: (1) a high level of traffic speed monitoring, combined with dynamic changeable message information signs, leads to a low percentage of traffic violations; (2) no higher than an 80 kph speed limit should be maintained on provincial roads - maintaining this speed limit led to an 80% reduction of bodily injury accidents; (3) a lower speed limit is crucial for intersections - 80 kph is too fast for intersections.
