TRANSPORT PRACTICES IN THE OLD CITY OF RIGA

The City of Riga was established in 1201. Today, "Old Riga" is an historical site with irreplaceable architecture. It also serves as a centre for business, government and tourism, all of which are important to maintain the buildings and "look" of Old Riga. Old Riga's network of narrow streets present major problems for access. The City has addressed this with eliminating access to public transportation in the '70s and developed a system of restricted automobile access in the '80s with the objective of making this area convenient for pedestrians and people friendly, while still being efficient for business. Planning has had to integrate the development of the transportation network adjacent to "Old Riga" so as to serve both the old town and the surrounding community.
