APPLYING BEST PRACTICE TO MINIMISE THE ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF TRAFFIC FROM MINERAL WORKINGS
Entec UK Ltd recently completed a programme of research for the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (Minerals Division) to investigate the environmental impacts of on-site and off-site traffic associated with mineral workings. The objective of the research was: 'to produce a draft framework of guidance for mineral planning authorities and mineral operators aimed at minimising the adverse effects arising from traffic associated with mineral workings, including on-site traffic/transport systems, whilst having regard to the need to maintain mineral production in an economic and viable way'. The scope of the research was very wide, encompassing: all modes of traffic, both on site and off site; all types of mineral working; all forms of environmental effects.
