ROADS FOR MORE PLEASING APPEARANCE: ARCHITECTURAL QUALITY ISSUES IN ROAD MANAGEMENT

VACKRARE VAEG: ARKITEKTONISKA KVALITETSFRAAGOR I VAEGHAALLNINGEN

The publication describes how the Swedish Road Administration incorporates architecture, landscape architecture and aesthetic design in road management. roadworks are among largest construction schemes in society. Roads are large elements in our daily environment. Most of the impression of the landscape is gained from what it is seen from the road. In towns, roads are prominent parts of the townscape. During the 60s and 70s, architectural and design aspects were often overshadowed be technology and economy. During the 80s, the role of architecture in society was increasingly debated. Design of bridges received greater attention. Today the Administration employs architects and landscape architects. Seminars and training courses are held. Outside architects are regularly used, and special projects are subject to architectural competition. Each of the seven regions of the Administration has an environmental and visual amenity council. Since 1991, a prize has been given for the best road or bridge design. The road environment has improved, but there are still many shortcomings. In many projects, design plays very little part. The endeavour of the Road Administration is to provide uniform high quality in road design regardless of size or geographical position.
