PROGRAMME FOR ROAD INFORMATICS: LOCAL TRIP PLANNING SYSTEMS

PROGRAM FOER VAEGINFORMATIK: TEMA INFORMATION FOERE OCH UNDER RESAN. LOKALA RESEPLANERINGSSYSTEM - EN LITTERATURSTUDIE

The literature study shows that there is need for information about the public transport system as an important factor in ensuring its accessibility, but it does not show what this need is in different situations. How is the need of traveller for information to be satisfied? How is information to be made available in a real travel environment? For these questions to be answered, knowledge of the way information is to be transmitted to travellers must be improved, but there are few studies on usefulness of information carriers from the perspective of travellers. The literature indicates that individual transport firms endeavour to enhance the attractiveness of public transport, e.g. by better information for travellers, but there are no investigations into the effectiveness of this. This also applies to information for elderly and disabled. Information for these groups should include information on physical accessibility during the whole journey. IT creates new means of designing and transmitting information on public transport, but it can also introduce new difficulties. Information and trip planning systems using IT are still in their infancy. Evaluations of IT solutions at present used in public transport are not described in the literature. More research is needed, and methodology must be developed.
