AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE NAVIGATION WITH REAL-TIME 3D LASER BASED POSITIONING FOR CONSTRUCTION
This paper first describes navigation systems which use a combination of dead reckoning, absolute referencing systems, such as beacon-based systems, and vision and mapping based systems. The authors then present a new form of navigation which uses real-time laser based technology and does not rely on dead reckoning. Issues and strategies associated with the use of laser-based positioning systems in autonomous guided vehicles is discussed. The authors point out that this laser based system is unique in that it has the capability of providing 3D position data with five updates per second. This feature is useful in the automating movement in rough terrain such as construction.
