BOX GIRDERS SUBJECTED TO TORSION - 1
The paper which is in two parts presents a numerical method for evaluating the 'distortional' effects induced in box girders subjected to torsion. The advantage of the method is that 'distortional' effects in box girders with variable moment of inertia along the span and generalised support conditions can be analysed as routine structural problems without recourse to computer-based or grossly approximate methods. Based on the 'beam on elastic foundation' analogy, it permits the study of the 'distortional' effects in isolation for eventual superimposition on the other well-understood structural effects in box girders. This, the first part of the paper, gives a brief description of the overall structural response of box girders subjected to generalised loading.(a) /TRRL/
