Status of Foreign Advanced Highway Technology
The purpose of this report is to assess the general status of development work in Europe and Japan that relates to the California Program on Advanced Technology for the Highway, PATH. The PROMETHEUS program in Europe is first discussed. A five country European study is being carried out primarily by fourteen automobile manufacturers. A seven year R&D effort costing $100,000 million/yr will be funded by both government and industry. In Japan, a national program of research and development on the Intelligent Vehicle System (IVSA) is under the Mininstry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) representing universities, the federal government, the automobile industry, and the electrical/electronics industry. A 15-25 year effort of 100 billion yen ($700 million) is planned.
