The work carried out in described and the results obtained are summarized of plate bearing tests and dynamic and static soundings in chalk. In situ tests were conducted at 2 sites in Grade II and Grade V chalk. The report also puts forward tentative expressions for a preliminary estimate of immediate and consolidation settlements of circular plates up to about 1 m in diameter, placed near ground level and loaded up to about 1,000 kN/m square for the 2 sites. Figures are used to illustrate the results of stress vs final settlement for plate bearing tests. For Grade II chalk, immediate settlements of circular plates up to 762 mm dia. appear to show a linear relationship to plate diameter and stress up to a certain stress level. An equation is used to describe conditions in Grade V chalk. In the latter chalk, the settlements were 4 times greater than comparable loading conditions in grade II chalk. No significant consolidation settlements were detected for grade II chalk up to a stress level of 500 kN/m square for the 762 mm dia. plate. In grade V chalk, the consolidation settlements for this plate size appeared to be approximately equal to the immediate settlements. Both immediate and consolidation settlements occurred fairly rapidly. Findings with regard to dynamic and static soundings are also discussed.
