STRATEGY FOR ECOLOGICALLY SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: PROGRESS AND DIRECTIONS

In 1995 Austroads Strategy for Ecologically Sustainable Development indicated that progress needed to be regularly reviewed in so far as ESD was a journey rather than a destination. Subtitled Progress and Directions, this document represents a review of progress and is particularly relevant given Australia's current international environmental obligations and contemporary issues and needs. This report focuses on four key components: strategic context and recent developments in the international and national arena; Austroads ESD journey over the last five years and assessment of progress; current priorities; and strategic directions. A self-assessment tool is provided to assess how well Austroads member authorities - the Australian state and territory road authorities, the Commonwealth Department of Development and Regional Services, the Australian Local Government Association and Transit New Zealand - are integrating and balancing the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability. A Microsoft Excel-based Visual Basic software application of the self-assessment tool is also provided and can be used in the identification of areas of strength and weakness, guidelines for further improvement and demonstrating change in performance over time.
