PANORAMA OF TRANSPORT: STATISTICAL OVERVIEW OF ROAD, RAIL AND INLAND WATERWAY TRANSPORT IN THE EUROPEAN UNION: DATA 1970-1996

This document aims to describe the most important features of transport in the EU by presenting and commenting on various statistical tables, charts, and graphs. Its tables mostly give comparative figures for different EU countries. It not only describes transport in terms of numbers of people and quantities of freight moved, and vehicles and infrastructure used, but also as part of the economy. The section on transport infrastructure covers general development, lengths of national transport networks, expenditure, and Trans-European transport networks (TENs). Key indicators for road, rail, and inland waterways in the EU, and numbers of different types of rail and road vehicles in EU countries are tabulated for the years 1970, 1980, 1990, and for most of the years 1991-96. Some statistical tables are given for various types of transport enterprise. Freight transport statistics are given in considerable detail, and cover the EU as a whole, national and international goods transport, cabotage, and transport by groups of goods. Statistics are also given for public transport in the EU and by country. Tables and graphs are given of numbers of fatalities and fatalities per unit distance travelled for the EU and its nations. The other tables cover energy and fuel consumption, noise and pollutant emissions, and EU emission standards.
