ADVANCES IN UNDERWATER WELDING: THE MIT/MARINE INDUSTRY COLLEGIUM OPPORTUNITY BRIEF
Offshore platforms, undersea oilwell completion systems, and pipelines associated with obtaining oil beneath the sea offer product and service opportunities for companies that can repair and fabricate structures in the marine environment. If certain specifications can be met, underwater "wet" welding shows great potential. Until recently, underwater welding was done by trial and error, with little theoretical foundation. In the past five years, however, the growing need for repair of offshore structues has inspired a substantial amount of academic and industrial research. As new understanding, new technologies and new methods emerge to meet needs for improved underwater welding systems, marine shipping, drilling, mining, fishing and other aspects of ocean utilization may benefit from the technology.
