THE ENERGY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MOVEMENT OF COAL BY BARGE

After a preliminary introduction to the concept of energy analysis and the inland waterways transportation system, two barge transportation links are chosen from an idealized model of coal flows to selected utility plants along the Ohio River for an energy analysis. The Howe mathematical model of barge tow performance and a towboat linear fuel consumption model are combined to determine the energy intensity for barge traffic on the two different routes. The calculated energy intensities for these two examples fall within the bank of energy intensity values for inland waterway transportation which have been determined by other methodologies.
