STANDARDISATION OF CAR BUMPERS AT A SAFE HEIGHT (PRELIMINARY DRAFT)

An analysis of the statistics of fatal pedestrian/vehicle accidents is given for eight countries. Vehicle involvement by type in pedestrian accidents is also studied, with the distribution and location of pedestrian accidents. A bumper height specification for private cars is recommended with reference to pedestrian injury and average height of knee joint. Car to car side impact is also discussed with reference to matching bumper and side-sill heights. Also mentioned are the effects of the recommendation on: car/heavy vehicle accidents, current styling and design, harmony with other regulations and results from international research. Estimates of injuries and costs to be saved are put forward. (A) /TRRL/
