APPARATUS FOR MEASURING THE EVENNESS OF ROAD SURFACINGS (CHAPTER 26)

APPAREIL DE MESURE DE L"UNI DE REVETEMENTS RAUTIERS (CHAPITRE 26)

After defining evenness, the author describes the longitudinal profile analyzer designed and produced by the equipment laboratories. It is a portable device pulled by a lightweight vehicle, the maximum speed of which is 160 km/h. It can reconstitute the variations in the peaks and troughs of a longitudinal profile according to vehicle axis or road design. Its principle consists in measuring the angle clearance of the wheel-supporting arm in relation to the reference of measurement. The clearance is transformed into a proportional electrical signal which is recorded on magnetic tapes. This recording is called a sample. A portable magnetic recorder is used. After the recording of a given road profile, the electrical signal representing this profile is reconstituted. The evenness of the surfacing can be considered as a random, stationary phenomenon; the sample is processed: (1) either as a spectral density curve, or (2) is subjected to automatic processing. /TRRL/
