PROCEDURES AND DEVICES TO MONITOR OPERATOR ALERTNESS WHILST OPERATING MACHINERY IN OPEN-CUT MINES
This report describes the review carried out by ARRB Transport Research and Murdoch University to assess current fatigue related countermeasures with the aim of reducing injury, machine damage and downtime incidents in the open-cut mining industry in Australia. The project built on the experience of fatigue-related issues gained in road safety research. Consultations with mining companies, industry stakeholders, and research and technology experts led to the design of a fatigue monitoring device. This device presents a visual stimulus to the operator who must respond or, within a set time, an auditory warning alerts the supervisor. Failure to react to the auditory warning causes a shutdown of the machinery. It is recommended that the stimulus-response device designed by the research team be developed and tested in a pilot program. (a) Report for the Australian Coal Association Research Program
