ACCIDENTS AND TRAFFIC VOLUME
UNFALLGESCHEHEN UND VERKEHRSABLAUF
The development of a mathematical model for the traffic pattern on a two-lane road outside built-up areas where there is no limitation of the possibility of overtaking is described in the study. The model is based on numerous measurements of the traffic flow, particularly of the travel times, on these roads. In addition, a representative pattern of driver overtaking behaviour on roads outside built-up areas is made up, on the basis of the research results published by other authors. These considerations are the precondition for a model describing the interactions of vehicles on a road outside built-up areas by way of a queueing analogy. The deductions permit calculation of the real travel-time distribution on a road outside built-up areas. The results agree with the corresponding empirical data. The method can be used to calculate the interrelation between the parameters of the speed distribution (e.g. the mean or 85% speed) and the traffic volume in both directions as well as the percentage of lorries. This is demonstrated by a series of calculations given as examples. This model can be used as an aid in determining the capacity of roads outside built-up areas. It can also serve to estimate the consequences of traffic-control measures, e.g. speed limits on such roads.
