CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY
This article traces the historical and technological development of bitumen. Since the early years of bitumen emulsion utilization, the tonnage has steadily increased in Europe and, with the exception of 1 setback, it is still developing after 70 years. This is not matched by any other technique and is due to the versatility of emulsion. In Europe alone, approximately 275 million tons of hot and 10 million tons of cold asphalt is produced annually. In addition to the different types of hot mix material there are cold mixes, emulsions, oil gravel, and in-situ recycled mixes. Production is a specialized activity and is not carried out in all refineries. France is responsible for about 50% of the total manufactured and used in Europe. Additional developments, applications, and techniques relating to bitumen in paving are also discussed.
