A WATERSHED ON THE AUSTRALIAN WATERFRONT? THE 1998 STEVEDORING DISPUTE
This paper attempts to analyze the origins of the 1998 lockout and strike in Australian stevedoring that brought an end to a period of industrial peace and relative labor stability on the island continent's docks. The causes of the dispute along with the resolution are examined. The paper sets the dispute in the context of the proactive multinational management of human resources in the global economy and the implications of such trends for Australia.
