TRAFFIC MONITORING IN MOTORWAYS BY REAL-TIME NUMBER PLATE RECOGNITION
This paper describes a system for traffic monitoring on freeways by using a license plate recognition system. Local processing units positioned near the freeway access points are connected to a central control station by radio link. Each video sequence frame is processed to extract character information. A temporal post-processing step is used to merge them. List of the license plate numbers are maintained at a central control station. Incoming information is then compared against existing data for matches.
