This article focuses on the need for the development and implementation of a National Traveler Information System. The different components of such a system are described, as are the benefits that arise from use of the system. The author contends however, that there are political, institutional and financial barriers that affect the widespread deployment of advanced traveler information systems. Promoting standardization and use of the Internet to supply traveler information are presented as possible methods of nurturing a National Traveler Information System.
