VMS IN THE POLDER : THE EMERGENCE OF A STANDARDIZED MODULAR INFORMATION SYSTEM TO CONTROL, SUPPORT AND PROMOTE INITIATIVES FOR VMS IN HOLLAND IN A FLEXIBLE WAY
This paper begins with a description of current usage of variable message signs for traffic management in Amsterdam. The authors then focus on the standardization efforts that led to standardized functional and technical specifications for dynamic signs, a Central Dynamic Route Information Panels (DRIP) Management system, and the development of a communication protocol. The paper concludes with a discussion of recent developments, and the strengths and weaknesses of graphical information.
